The music world is abuzz once again as Johnny Marr, the former guitarist of The Smiths, expressed his disgust after one of the band’s songs was played at a Donald Trump campaign rally. In a video shared on Twitter, The Smiths’ classic track “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” from the album “Hatful of Hollow” played during the South Dakota event.

Marr took to Twitter to denounce the use of the song, stating, “Ahh…right…OK. I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this shit shut right down right now.”

Artists Against Trump

Donald Trump has faced significant opposition from musicians who refuse to associate themselves with his politics. The list of artists who have spoken out against Trump using their songs is extensive and includes iconic names such as Adele, Aerosmith, the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Guns N’ Roses, Leonard Cohen, Linkin Park, Neil Young, Nickelback, Ozzy Osbourne, Panic! at the Disco, Pharrell Williams, Phil Collins, Prince, Queen, R.E.M., Rihanna, the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Village People, and the White Stripes.

Trump’s Controversial Legacy

It’s no secret that Donald Trump’s presidency was engulfed in controversy. Despite being impeached twice and facing multiple indictments on felony counts, including falsifying business records, mishandling classified documents, conspiracy, and racketeering, Trump is currently running for a second term. He recently claimed victory in the New Hampshire Primary, bringing him one step closer to securing the Republican Party’s nomination for the 2024 election. If successful, it would set the stage for a rematch between Trump and current President Joe Biden.

Trump’s use of music at his rallies has consistently faced backlash, with artists standing up against their songs being associated with the politician. Johnny Marr’s condemnation adds to the growing list of musicians who refuse to have their music used for political purposes.
