Gen Z LGBTQ

A recent national survey has revealed that the LGBTQ community is thriving among Generation Z adults in the United States. This younger demographic, aged between 18 and 25, is leading the way, with nearly 30% identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer. In comparison, the percentages drop significantly for older generations. This groundbreaking report, released by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), sheds light on the evolving landscape of sexuality and identity among younger Americans.

A Generational Shift

According to PRRI’s survey, 28% of Generation Z adults proudly embrace their LGBTQ identity. This is a stark contrast to the 10% of all adults, 16% of millennials, 7% of Generation X, and only 4% of baby boomers and the Silent Generation who identify as LGBTQ. Melissa Deckman, CEO of PRRI, highlights this generational divide, stating, “With respect to LGBTQ identity, it’s very clear that Gen Z adults look different than older Americans.”

The report further reveals that within Generation Z, 72% identify as straight, 15% as bisexual, 5% as gay or lesbian, and 8% as something else, exemplifying the diverse range of sexual orientations within this age group.

Embracing Diversity and Breaking Barriers

In addition to their LGBTQ identification, Generation Z adults are also redefining ethnic and racial diversity within the United States. This younger generation is less likely to affiliate with established religions and more likely to embrace diversity in all its forms. Notably, PRRI’s survey found that both Generation Z adults and millennials are more likely to identify as LGBTQ than as Republican.

The findings of this survey are consistent with other major studies, such as Gallup’s, which also show that Generation Z is the queerest adult generation to date. In a recent Gallup poll, 7.2% of adults in the U.S. identified as LGBTQ, with nearly 20% of Generation Z falling within this category.

Advocacy in the Face of Challenges

While Generation Z’s LGBTQ community continues to grow, LGBTQ rights face ongoing challenges in the United States. In the past year alone, over 500 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced in state legislatures across the country, with 75 of them being signed into law. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) reports that more than 320 bills have already been introduced or prefiled this year.

Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign, the country’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group, emphasizes the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility and the impact of Generation Z. She states, “Whether it’s at the polls, in marches and rallies, or online, LGBTQ+ visibility matters, and Gen Z is a force for change.” With thousands of LGBTQ+ young people turning 18 every day, lawmakers should be cognizant of the repercussions that anti-LGBTQ+ political attacks may have in upcoming elections.
