Wild Bunch TV has partnered with Fremantle-backed Monster to bring us the Norwegian drama series “Holmlia Love.” This six-part series marks one of the first projects to emerge from the New8 Euro pubcasters’ pact.
A Powerful Story of Love and Tragedy
“Holmlia Love” is based on the true story of Benjamin Hermansen, a 15-year-old boy of Ghanaian and Norwegian origin who was tragically murdered by Neo-Nazis in 2001. The series explores the aftermath of this race-motivated crime and focuses on the close-knit community in Oslo’s multicultural Holmlia district, as they come together to cope with the shocking event.
A Tale of Friendship and Guilt
Set in the summer of 2000, the show follows teenage boys Nader and Benjamin, who enjoy carefree days at the beach. Meanwhile, single mom Ingrid moves to the area for a fresh start. However, tragedy strikes six months later when one of the boys is brutally killed by neo-Nazis, leaving the other struggling with survivor’s guilt. The parents, friends, and neighbors, including Ingrid, must navigate the profound consequences of the crime.
A Personal Mission
Creator, co-writer, and co-director Mikael Diseth, who attended secondary school with the victim, felt compelled to tell this story. Reflecting on the impact it had on his community, Diseth said, “The way the people around me reacted – with love – is the most inspiring thing I’ve ever witnessed.” Diseth aims to honor Benjamin’s memory through this series, ensuring that we do not forget the tragedy that took place.
A Partnership of Visionaries
Wild Bunch TV, drawn to the success and style of Monster, eagerly joined forces to bring “Holmlia Love” to audiences beyond the eight northern European territories. This partnership marks a significant milestone for the newly-formed New8 alliance and its pioneering projects.
A Show with Universal Appeal
Diana Bartha, head of international sales and acquisitions at Wild Bunch TV, described “Holmlia Love” as a “pioneering project” that resonates with a wide audience internationally. In a world searching for stability, cultural identity, and hope, the series explores themes that are universally relatable and speaks to audiences of all generations.
