Thom Yorke, the renowned musician and frontman of Radiohead and The Smile, has once again showcased his talent in composing film soundtracks. This time, Yorke has provided the music for Italian director Daniele Luchetti’s latest relationship drama, “Trust.” The film is set to premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival and has already garnered much anticipation.

“Trust” marks the second collaboration between Yorke and Luchetti, following their work together on Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 remake of “Suspiria.” In 2019, Yorke also contributed to Edward Norton’s “Motherless Brooklyn.” With each project, Yorke continues to prove his versatility and ability to create captivating and evocative musical compositions.

Based on the novel “Confidenza” by Neapolitan writer Domenico Starnone, “Trust” revolves around Pietro Vella, a teacher in his 40s played by A-list Italian actor Elio Giordano. Set in a rundown high school in Rome, the story delves into Pietro’s complex romantic entanglement with a former student, triggering deep-seated fears within him.

According to Luchetti, “Trust” explores the theme of a man torn between the fear of love and a love of fear. The acclaimed director, known for helming the third season of RAI/HBO’s “My Brilliant Friend,” emphasizes how this fear can paralyze an entire lifetime. Luchetti and Yorke’s collaboration began with the documentary “Codice Carla,” where Yorke shared some preexisting tracks from his former band Atoms for Peace.

Their partnership deepened when Luchetti approached Yorke about composing the score for “Trust.” Though Yorke initially hesitated due to time constraints, he eventually found inspiration in the screenplay and created a piece that resonated with the film’s essence. Luchetti describes it as a beautiful surprise and a lovely gift.

Throughout the creative process, Luchetti and Yorke drew on the emotional subtext of the film’s scenes. They explored unconventional avenues to build the music, seeking a sound that felt slightly off, yet perfectly aligned with the narrative. Yorke’s score for “Trust” encompasses classical orchestral strings, a jazz orchestra, and a significant electronic music component.

“Trust” is co-produced by Italy’s Indiana Production and Vision Distribution, which is also responsible for the film’s international sales and theatrical release in Italy.
