Tragedy struck when a drone attack targeted a base in northeast Jordan, near the Syria border, claiming the lives of three brave U.S. troops. The United States Central Command confirmed the casualties and reported that an additional 25 soldiers were injured in the assault.
A Devastating Blow
This heartbreaking incident marks the first American fatalities caused by Iranian-backed militant groups since October 7. For now, the identities of the fallen soldiers remain undisclosed until their families are notified, a somber duty that awaits.
President Biden’s Response
President Joe Biden expressed his condolences and condemned the ruthless act, attributing the attack to “radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.” The President went on to state that the investigation is ongoing, as the authorities gather all the necessary facts surrounding this horrific event.
In President Biden’s words, “Today, America’s heart is heavy. Last night, three U.S. service members were killed—and many wounded—during an unmanned aerial drone attack on our forces stationed in northeast Jordan near the Syria border.”
The Claims and Uncertainty
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has claimed responsibility for four drone attacks on different locations. These include the Al-Shaddadi Base in Syria, the Syria-Jordan border bases of Al-Rukban and Al-Tanf, and even the Zevulun naval facility in Israel. However, it remains unclear if this group is indeed responsible for the loss of the three American lives.
Honoring the Fallen
President Biden paid tribute to the fallen servicemen, referring to them as “patriots in the highest sense.” He vowed to uphold their commitment in the fight against terrorism and made it clear that those accountable for this heinous act will face justice, at a time and in a manner determined by the United States.
