During a recent panel discussion for the film “Oppenheimer,” actress Florence Pugh shared an amusing incident that happened during the filming of a particularly intimate scene. And it involves a broken camera!
According to Pugh, while shooting a sex scene with co-star Cillian Murphy, the camera unexpectedly malfunctioned. Talk about a timing mishap! Pugh revealed this little-known fact during a conversation with Murphy, Jamie Dornan (the panel’s moderator), and Emily Blunt, all of whom star in “Oppenheimer.”
“There we were, in the middle of our sex scene, and the camera broke,” Pugh said. “Nobody knows this, but it did. Our camera broke when we were both naked, and needless to say, it was not ideal timing.”
To add to their woes, there were limited cameras available on set, and one of them happened to be at the repair shop. So, the crew had to come up with a solution to fix the broken camera on the spot.
Pugh humorously described the situation, saying, “Cillian and I are in this room together. It’s a closed set, so we’re both holding our bodies like this.” She then gestured by wrapping her arms around herself. While they anxiously awaited the camera repair person, Pugh took advantage of the situation to gain some technical knowledge.
“I thought, well, this is my moment to learn. ‘So tell me, what’s wrong with this camera?'” she recalled asking the person who entered the room. Pugh’s curiosity served her well, as she engaged in a conversation about the camera’s shutter, displaying her keen interest in the filmmaking process.
Ultimately, director Christopher Nolan explained that the issue arose due to lighting complications. Pugh couldn’t help but express her admiration for the talented crew and their dedication to making an exceptional movie. She highlighted how fortunate she felt to be part of such an amazing team.
In “Oppenheimer,” Pugh portrays Jean Tatlock, a character involved with Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer while he was married to Blunt’s Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. The film garnered an impressive 13 nominations, including Best Picture, at the 2024 Oscars.
Movie sets can be full of surprises, as Florence Pugh’s revelation about the camera mishap during the filming of “Oppenheimer” clearly demonstrates.
