Manchester United narrowly escaped an FA Cup upset, defeating League Two team Newport County 4-2 in a thrilling match. For much of the game, United’s winger Antony played the role of the underdog perfectly, but he eventually emerged as the hero.

In the first half, United dominated, taking a 2-0 lead with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo. However, Newport fought back valiantly, scoring goals from Bryn Morris and Will Evans to level the score. Tension grew as United’s grip on the match slipped away.

Then, in the 68th minute, Antony, who had been struggling for form and faced allegations of assault and abusive behavior, seized his moment. After a Luke Shaw shot hit the post, Antony pounced on the rebound and scored his first goal of the season. This crucial goal prevented United from suffering a humiliating Cup defeat and spared manager Erik Ten Hag from added pressure.

Throughout the game, United struggled with off-field issues, including Marcus Rashford’s absence due to an “internal matter.” Ten Hag’s squad has faced challenges with professionalism this season, and questions about their commitment persist.

With the FA Cup as their only remaining shot at silverware this season, Ten Hag fielded a strong lineup. Newport County, known for their giant-killing reputation, had defeated Leeds, Leicester, and drawn with Tottenham in the past.

United got off to a lightning-fast start, with Fernandes opening the scoring in the 7th minute after an assist from Antony. Mainoo doubled the lead soon after, scoring his first senior goal. However, Newport County fought back, with Morris scoring a rocket from long range in the 36th minute. Evans then equalized early in the second half.

The tension in the stadium grew as Newport County’s fans roared their team on. However, Antony’s goal shifted the momentum back in United’s favor. In injury time, Rasmus Hojlund sealed United’s victory with a fourth goal.

United’s journey in the FA Cup continues as they await their fifth-round opponents, either Nottingham Forest or Bristol City, in late February.
