For almost half a century, the mysterious disappearance and brutal murder of Teree Becker remained unsolved. In December 1975, Teree was last seen hitchhiking to visit her boyfriend in Brighton, Colorado. Two days later, her lifeless body was discovered in a field near Denver. The case seemed destined to remain in the shadows, until now.
A Breakthrough in DNA Technology
Thanks to advancements in DNA technology and genetic genealogy, investigators have finally identified Teree Becker’s killer. The perpetrator, Thomas Martin Elliot, had a long history of criminal behavior and spent a significant portion of his life behind bars. Tragically, Elliot died by suicide in 1991 at the age of 40.
Unraveling the Mystery
The investigation took an unexpected turn when an unknown male DNA profile, linked to Becker’s case, matched a DNA profile from a 1991 cold case in Las Vegas. Through genetic genealogy, a collaborative effort between the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Parabon Nanolabs, and Solved By DNA, Elliot was identified as the prime suspect.
Years of Incarceration
Prior to Teree Becker’s murder, Thomas Elliot committed a burglary in Lakewood, Colorado, which resulted in a six-year prison sentence. After being released in Las Vegas in 1981, Elliot committed another crime and was sentenced to an additional ten years behind bars. It was during this time that he would perpetrate the heinous murder that eventually led to his identification.
Closure for a ‘Free Spirit’
Born in Casper, Wyoming, Teree Becker moved to the Denver metro area after graduating high school. Described by her family as a “free spirit,” Teree embraced life on the edge and had a talent for connecting with people from all walks of life. She had a passion for painting, music, and was known for her ability to hold captivating conversations.
“We are thrilled we were able to solve this cold case and hopefully bring closure to the friends and family of Teree Becker,” expressed the Westminster Police Department.
