Emily Blunt’s outstanding performance in Oppenheimer has earned her an Oscar nomination, but it’s a brutal scene that was cut from the movie that has her apologizing to co-star Cillian Murphy.

During the filming of one of the most intense moments of the movie, director Christopher Nolan instructed Emily to repeatedly slap Cillian’s face. Emily shares, “Sorry about your cheekbone Cillian. Poor Cillian. Chris went, ‘Hit him.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know.’ And Cillian was like, ‘Do it, do it.’ Chris was like, ‘He’ll be fine…do it.'” However, this scene didn’t make it into the final cut, even though it left Cillian’s cheekbone more prominent than ever.

Emily, who portrays Kitty, the wife of Cillian’s physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, reveals that tension was already running high between her and Cillian. The scene they were filming included one of the movie’s most significant moments, where Emily delivers the intense line: “You don’t get to commit sin and then ask all of us to feel sorry for you when there are consequences.”

Despite the pressure of time and the tension building on set, Emily praises Cillian’s performance in the challenging scene where he had to portray a gibbering, incoherent state. She describes him as “captivating” and “mesmerizing” in the role.

Off-camera, Emily inadvertently caused Cillian to seek medical treatment while filming in New Mexico. Concerned about his demanding role affecting his sleep, she gifted him a “fantastic” pillow. Little did she know that he would enjoy it so much that he would hit his head on the bedside table, requiring his head to be glued shut. It seems their gift exchange was eventful, as Cillian later gave Emily a bottle that she jokingly claims she “almost killed him with” during another violent scene.

Despite the challenges faced on set, Emily and Cillian have formed a strong friendship, and both have received Oscar nominations for their roles in Oppenheimer. The movie has been nominated in 13 categories, with Cillian up for Best Actor and Emily up for Best Supporting Actress. Emily expresses her admiration for her co-star, saying, “He was an amazing scene partner. I love Cillian, Mr. Ocean Eyes, so much. He’s a wonderful friend.”

In addition to her success in Oppenheimer, Emily has starred in various other popular films such as The Devil Wears Prada, Mary Poppins Returns, A Quiet Place, and Sicario. Despite her achievements, she remains starstruck by acting icons like Meryl Streep and Anthony Hopkins, who she describes as “magical.” Acting is Emily’s true passion, and she cherishes the opportunities she has been given in the industry.

As she prepares for the upcoming Oscars, Emily reflects on her nomination with gratitude and excitement, declaring, “It really does make me buzz with gratitude. I’m so moved by it.”

Emily’s journey in the film industry has been shaped by her love for acting and the support she has received from her family. She hopes to use her platform to make impactful movies, including one that explores the experience of stuttering, which she can relate to personally.

Before she takes the stage at the Oscars, Emily is thrilled to celebrate her first nomination alongside Cillian Murphy, her friend and co-star. Their collaboration in Oppenheimer has left a lasting impression, and audiences eagerly await their next on-screen endeavors.
