America Ferrera, known for her roles in “Real Women Have Curves,” “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” and the workplace comedy “Superstore,” is set to make her directorial debut with “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.” The film is based on the bestselling novel by Erika Sánchez and was previously attached to Netflix.
Written by Linda Yvette Chávez, the story follows Julia Reyes, a teenager in Chicago with aspirations of becoming a renowned writer. Julia feels the weight of her traditional Mexican immigrant parents’ expectations, who constantly compare her to her seemingly perfect sister Olga. Tragedy strikes when Olga unexpectedly passes away, leaving Julia to uncover her sister’s truth and confront the wounds carried by her family.
Producing the film are Doreen Wilcox Little, Charles D. King, Poppy Hanks, David Kuhn, and Greta Talia Fuentes. Ferrera, who has directed episodes of “Superstore,” will be at the helm of her first feature film. She is represented by CAA, ID, and Peikoff & Mahan.
Chávez is represented by The Mission Entertainment, WME, and Del Shaw, while Sánchez is represented by The Gersh Agency, Trellis Literary Management, and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.
