Dearborn mayor

The mayor of Dearborn, Abdullah Hammoud, has taken swift action to address the security concerns raised by a recent opinion article published in The Wall Street Journal. The article, titled “Welcome to Dearborn: America’s Jihad Capital,” has faced severe backlash from Muslim advocacy groups and elected officials.

In the op-ed, the author suggests that Dearborn’s residents, including Muslim faith leaders and politicians, support extremist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. Dearborn, with its substantial population of Muslims and Arab Americans, took immediate offense to these sweeping, inflammatory claims.

Mayor Hammoud, the first Arab American mayor of Dearborn, wasted no time in increasing security measures throughout the city. He acknowledged the alarming rise in Islamophobic rhetoric targeting Dearborn and prioritized the safety of the community. The mayor emphasized the need for vigilance in the face of such harmful stereotypes.

The op-ed, written by Steven Stalinsky, the executive director of the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), drew strong criticism from various organizations and lawmakers. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee condemned the article’s anti-Muslim sentiment. Michigan Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow, alongside Representative Pramila Jayapal, expressed their disapproval on social media.

Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, the Democratic majority whip, described the headline as dangerous and called for unity against hate and bigotry. President Joe Biden also weighed in, cautioning against blaming an entire group based on the actions of a few individuals.

Mayor Hammoud responded directly to President Biden’s post, urging his administration to recognize the underlying factors that contribute to such divisive rhetoric. He emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes.

The article comes at a time when Muslims across the United States have been experiencing heightened fear and anxiety due to a rise in hate incidents. The Council on American-Islamic Relations reported a significant increase in complaints of anti-Muslim or anti-Palestinian bias incidents in late 2023. The need to combat these biases and create a more inclusive society has become increasingly urgent.
