Chuck Schumer

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, has announced his intention to move forward with a vote on an aid package for Israel and Ukraine. This decision comes after Republicans indicated that they would block the passage of the bipartisan border security and foreign aid bill.

If Schumer can secure the necessary 60 votes, a procedural motion will be initiated later this week to consider the legislative vehicle for the supplemental aid package. This package includes assistance for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, who previously supported the bipartisan border security bill negotiated between Democrats and a group of Republican senators, expressed his support for a vote on the supplemental aid bill without the border provisions during a leadership press conference.

According to a Senate Democratic aide, the second version of the bill will retain provisions that target fentanyl trafficking.

The new aid package will still undergo a series of votes, with the first being a procedural vote on the broader border and aid bill. Following this, a second vote will occur to decide whether to proceed with the narrower aid package.
