Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a bold move by replacing his top general in a dramatic shake-up of the country’s military. This decision comes at a crucial moment in Ukraine’s war against Russia, as its counteroffensive has faltered and international allies have grown wary of supporting its cause.
The Need for Urgent Changes
Zelenskyy openly discussed the necessary changes in the army and proposed to General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi to continue working together. The President expressed his gratitude for Zaluzhnyi’s consent but did not clarify whether he was fired or resigned. In a statement on Facebook, Zaluzhnyi mentioned having “an important and serious conversation” with Zelenskyy, resulting in the decision to change approaches and strategy.
The Appointment of Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi
Following this shake-up, Zelenskyy appointed Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, who currently leads Ukraine’s ground forces, to take charge of the army. The sudden replacement of Zaluzhnyi may raise questions about Zelenskyy’s leadership, especially as Ukraine faces a new offensive from Russia and doubts over continued military assistance from the United States and other governments.

Zaluzhnyi’s Role and Controversy
Valeriy Zaluzhnyi has been in charge of Ukraine’s army since before Russia’s invasion in February 2022. He is widely respected both within Ukraine and abroad for his role in the country’s defense against the Russians. However, rumors about Zaluzhnyi’s future have circulated for some time due to reported disagreements with Zelenskyy regarding Ukraine’s battlefield prospects and the need for mass mobilization.
In a previous editorial, Zaluzhnyi stated that the war had reached a stalemate and suggested that a significant leap in military technology was required to break the deadlock. Zelenskyy disagreed with this assessment, maintaining his belief that Ukraine can retake its occupied territories through military means alone.

Unity and Future Challenges

Nevertheless, Zaluzhnyi’s dismissal may raise questions from Ukraine’s Western partners, as Zelenskyy seeks to maintain international support. At home, it could fuel backlash against Zelenskyy, who has already faced accusations of authoritarianism and skepticism toward elections.
According to a poll conducted in December by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, 72% of Ukrainians expressed a negative attitude toward Zaluzhnyi’s resignation.
