Braving the Arctic Conditions
As part of the Royal Marines’ Cold Weather Aviation Operators Course, troops undergo rigorous training to equip them with the necessary skills to survive and thrive in these extreme conditions. The course consists of a week-long training package that includes classroom and practical lessons, followed by five nights of intense field training.
Equipped with top-of-the-line gear, including enhanced night-vision goggles and overalls, these troops learn to hide from thermal drones and navigate icy landscapes. They also learn invaluable skills like building and defending harbor areas. But the ultimate test comes on their last night of training.
The Survival Night Challenge
During the survival night, comrades are stripped down to minimal kit and must rely on their resourcefulness to make it through. They build shelters from snow or brushwood and endure wading through freezing lakes. It’s a grueling experience that pushes them to their limits, testing their mental strength and physical endurance.
The Arctic: Britain’s Role in NATO
If NATO were to go to war with Russia, Britain’s main role would be fighting in the challenging Arctic conditions. Ministers believe that these Arctic conditions pose the toughest challenges in the world. This elite force is set to lead Britain’s participation in the largest NATO war games since the Cold War, with 90,000 troops expected to take part in Exercise Steadfast Defender.
