Hong Kong is breaking new ground in the world of film coproductions by offering over $1 million per project to European filmmakers. This exciting initiative is set to be launched at the European Film Market in Berlin this week.
Developing New Talent Partnerships
The Hong Kong-Europe-Asian Film Collaboration Funding Scheme, an extension of the successful Hong Kong-Asian program, aims to provide additional support to filmmakers against the backdrop of challenging developments in the film industry. This scheme invites filmmakers from Hong Kong, Europe, and/or Asian countries to develop common ideas and foster new talent partnerships.
A Boost for the Film Industry
Under this grant scheme, successful film projects will receive grants of up to HK$9 million ($1.1 million), depending on the size of the production budget. Projects below this ceiling have the potential to be fully funded, while larger projects are expected to secure the remaining funds from other public or private sources.
Dr. Wilfred Wong, chairman of the Hong Kong Film Development Council, expressed his excitement about this new collaboration. “This scheme aims to provide funding for film projects co-produced with filmmakers from European and Asian countries, enhancing their exposure in international markets and fostering in-depth exchanges and mutual learning,” he said.
An Expanding Collaboration Footprint
This latest development builds upon the success of the first phase of the program. The Hong Kong Film Development Council received applications for grants under last year’s Hong Kong-Europe-Asian Film Collaboration Funding Scheme and is expected to announce the successful recipients in the coming weeks.
The Delegation in Berlin
To mark the launch of this scheme, a delegation from Hong Kong is visiting Berlin. The delegation includes producers Debbie Lam, Jacqueline Liu, and Saville Chan, as well as writer-directors Sasha Chuk and Chan Tai Lee. This visit showcases the commitment of the Hong Kong film industry to international collaboration and provides an opportunity for these talented professionals to explore exciting partnerships.
