When news broke last November about the development of a sixth Jason Bourne movie, fans were left wondering if the iconic Matt Damon would be returning to the action-packed franchise. The Bourne series, which has grossed $1.6 billion worldwide, includes four films headlined by Damon and one by Jeremy Renner. Damon’s last appearance as Bourne was in 2016’s “Jason Bourne.”

During a recent appearance on “The Late Show,” Damon teased fans by not confirming his involvement in the new Bourne installment. However, he showered incoming director Edward Berger with praise and expressed hope about working with him. Berger gained recognition in 2022 for his Netflix adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which received nine Oscar nominations and won several prizes, including Best Picture.

Damon said, “There is a great director named Edward Berger. [‘All Quiet on the Western Front’] is a fantastic film, and he’s wonderful. He said he had an idea [for Bourne], and I would love to work with him. So he’s working on it. Look, I’m as anxious as you are to see if this thing happens. I hope it’s great and that we can do it.”

Acknowledging the passage of time, Damon added, “At a certain point, somebody is going to need to take it over. I’m not getting any younger.”

Sources familiar with the project emphasized that the new Bourne movie is still in the early development stage. There is currently no script or attached screenwriter, making it impossible to determine if Damon, Renner, or both will return. If the project moves forward, Berger will join an impressive lineup of directors who have helmed the franchise, including Doug Liman, Paul Greengrass, and Tony Gilroy.

As of now, no further information about the new Bourne movie is available. To watch Damon’s full appearance on “The Late Show,” check out the video below:
