Atlantic Music Group made headlines on Monday with the announcement of staff changes that will see around two dozen employees being laid off. The majority of these layoffs will be from the radio and video departments.
In an internal memo obtained by Variety, Julie Greenwald, the chairman-CEO of Atlantic Music Group, highlighted the company’s plans to bring in fresh talent in areas such as social media, content creation, community building, and audience insights. These additions are aimed at enhancing fan focus and helping artists effectively communicate their stories.
The decision reflects a larger trend in the music industry, where major labels are adapting and reshaping their teams to meet the current plateauing of streaming growth. However, Greenwald emphasized that the company will be hiring versatile individuals capable of performing multiple roles. She assured employees that the move is not indicative of labels being reduced or merged, referring to Universal’s recent consolidation of formerly independent labels.
This news comes just weeks after Warner Music Group announced their own staff cuts, which will affect around 600 employees. As part of this restructuring, Warner Music Group plans to sell units such as HipHopDX and Uproxx.
Greenwald conveyed her message to the staff in a comprehensive note, expressing the importance of evolving and adding new resources and skill sets to the business units. She emphasized the need for dedicated teams with diverse talents, referring to them as “SWAT teams,” who will support artists in navigating the increasingly competitive music landscape.
While there will be some staff departures, mainly from the radio and video teams, Atlantic Music Group remains committed to maintaining their industry-leading position in those areas. Moreover, they will be actively recruiting individuals with expertise in social media, content creation, community building, and audience insights to further enhance fan engagement and storytelling.
Throughout the memo, Greenwald reassured employees that the unique cultures of each label within Atlantic Music Group, specifically 300, Elektra, and Atlantic, will be preserved and celebrated. The company believes that these distinct identities are instrumental in attracting top talent and nurturing successful careers.
