Pankaj Udhas, the renowned Indian singer known for his soul-stirring ghazal performances, passed away in Mumbai after a long illness. He was 72.

Udhas’ daughter, Nayaab, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, saying, “With a heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness.”

A Ghazal Icon

Pankaj Udhas made his debut with the ghazal album “Aahat” in 1980. He went on to release several hit albums, including “Mukarar” (1981), “Tarrannum” (1982), “Mehfil” (1983), and “Nayaab” (1985). One of his most memorable albums was the live recording of his concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, titled “Pankaj Udhas Live at Royal Albert Hall” (1984).

Recognition and Bollywood Success

Although film songs usually dominate the music scene in India, Pankaj Udhas managed to capture the hearts of a vast audience. His breakthrough came with the hit film “Naam” (1986), in which he sang the soulful track “Chitthi Aayee Hai” and appeared as himself in a concert scene set in a Hong Kong auditorium. He went on to lend his melodious voice to numerous Bollywood films, including “Dayavan” (1988), “Gawaahi” (1989), “Ghayal” (1990), “Saajan” (1991), and “Mohra” (1994).

A Multifaceted Talent

In addition to his singing career, Pankaj Udhas also composed songs for Bollywood films. He worked on the soundtracks of movies like “Aurat Pair Ki Juti Nahin Hai” (1985) and “Ek Hi Maqsad” (1988). His contributions to the field of ghazal music and his philanthropic endeavors earned him the prestigious Padmashree award in 2006.

Tributes Pour In

Pankaj Udhas’ passing has left a void in the music world, and tributes have poured in from across India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, saying, “We mourn the loss of Pankaj Udhas Ji, whose singing conveyed a range of emotions and whose Ghazals spoke directly to the soul. His departure leaves a void that can never be filled.”

India’s Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur, also mourned the loss, stating, “His career, spanning more than 4 decades, enriched our music industry and gifted us with some of the most memorable and melodious renditions of gazals. His demise is an irreparable loss to our music world.”

Anup Jalota, another renowned singer and contemporary of Pankaj Udhas, expressed his shock and offered his condolences to the family and loved ones of the music legend.

Pankaj Udhas’ music will continue to inspire and touch the hearts of generations to come. May his soul rest in peace.
