Sara Ramirez

It seems that the character of Che Diaz will no longer be gracing our screens in the upcoming third season of “And Just Like That.” According to multiple sources, Sara Ramirez will not be returning to the show, which is set to begin production later this year for a 2025 premiere on Max.

Ramirez has portrayed the nonbinary stand-up comedian Che Diaz since Season 1, a character that quickly became a viral sensation and subject of online ridicule. In a recent interview with Variety, Ramirez revealed that they tried to stay away from the online commentary surrounding the character. “Other people’s opinions of a character – that’s not something I can allow into my process,” Ramirez said. “I choose what I receive, right? That’s the beauty of being grown – I don’t have to receive everything!”

In the first season, Che Diaz swept Miranda off her feet, leading to the end of her marriage to Steve. However, their passionate relationship eventually deteriorated, resulting in a breakup in the second season. The Season 2 finale saw Carrie bidding farewell to her Upper East Side apartment with a final dinner party, where both Miranda and Che were in attendance.

Recently, Ramirez has been an outspoken advocate for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, as evidenced by their Instagram posts. However, rumors emerged that Ramirez’s departure from the show may be connected to their pro-Palestinian views. Variety’s sources have since disputed these claims, stating that the Che Diaz character had simply reached a natural conclusion following the end of their relationship with Miranda.

In an interview with showrunner Michael Patrick King after the Season 2 finale, he discussed the evolution of the Che character throughout the show. King defended the character, saying, “Every time people say they don’t like Che, I go, ‘You mean you don’t like stand-ups!'” He emphasized that the audience had the opportunity to see different sides of the character over the course of multiple seasons.

As we prepare for the third season of “And Just Like That,” it’s clear that there will be some significant changes in store for the show’s dynamic. Although we won’t be seeing Che Diaz anymore, fans can still look forward to the continued exploration of relationships and personal growth as the series moves forward.
