Are you ready for an incredible adventure? Imagine joining the producers and contestants of “The Amazing Race” on a private charter to Puerto Vallarta. Variety had the privilege to be a part of this thrilling experience in October 2022. We got a front-row seat to witness the show’s iconic moments up-close – from the race starting line on the beautiful beach in front of the Westin hotel to challenges involving Lucha Libre wrestlers and rodeo lassos. The energy was palpable as teammates already began screaming at each other, and the camera operators, the unsung heroes of the production, kept a close eye on every moment. And, of course, host Phil Keoghan was there, flawlessly performing his well-rehearsed stand-ups introducing the country the show was visiting.
An Exciting Premiere
But that’s not all. In the very first episode, we even witnessed a medical emergency during one of the tasks. It was a heart-pounding moment, but rest assured, everyone’s safety was taken care of. This season promises more heart-stopping moments to come. But you might be wondering, why did it take so long for this season to air? You can find all the behind-the-scenes details in our article, “Inside ‘The Amazing Race’ High-Wire Act and the Scramble Behind the Scenes Making TV’s Most Ambitious Competition Show.”
A Season Reimagined
Originally planned as Season 35 of “The Amazing Race,” this edition had to go through some changes. When CBS decided to expand both “Race” and “Survivor” into 90-minute episodes, the producers took the opportunity to shoot an entirely new season under these new parameters. With COVID restrictions relaxed, Season 35 brought back the more traditional gameplay that fans love. But what about the season shot back in October 2022? That’s where Season 36 comes in. It was still shot under more complicated COVID protocols, including chartered planes and other limitations. However, the producers were able to include footage that would have otherwise been edited out, making each episode a thrilling 90 minutes.
The Race Continues
This season of “The Amazing Race” introduces 13 new teams and eliminates non-elimination legs. According to CBS, racers will experience paragliding in Colombia, rally car racing in Argentina, and visit two new countries – swimming through waterfalls in the Dominican Republic and Rihanna’s childhood home in Barbados. The locations span across Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Barbados, and the Dominican Republic. The epic finale will take place in Pennsylvania, where the winning team will claim the coveted $1 million prize.
The Masterminds Behind the Show
“The Amazing Race” is the brainchild of creators Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri, who, along with Jonathan Littman, Jerry Bruckheimer, Mark Vertullo, Phil Keoghan, and Patrick Cariaga, serve as executive producers for Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Earthview Inc. in association with ABC Studios and Amazing Race Productions.
If you’re as excited as we are, mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 13, when Season 36 of “The Amazing Race” returns at 9:30 p.m. on CBS and Paramount+. Get ready to embark on a journey filled with adrenaline, challenges, and unforgettable moments.
