Tennessee Rise

Gloria Jones, a member of the famous “Tennessee Three,” fought against attempts from Republicans to eject her from the Tennessee legislature last year. Now, she has an impressive choir behind her as she campaigns to be elected to the U.S. Senate this fall. Grammy-winning singer Allison Russell has gathered more than 30 singers to record “Tennessee Rise,” an anthem that supports movements for social justice and equality in the state, with Jones’ candidacy at the forefront.

A Powerful Anthem with Star-Studded Support

A music video for the song was released on Wednesday, featuring many of the artists who lent their voices to the project. The star-studded lineup includes Brittany Howard, Amanda Shires, Brittney Spencer, Emmylou Harris, Brandi Carlile, and Maren Morris, among others. Drawing largely upon singers well-known in the Americana or country music worlds, the song brings together a huge cast of names like Katie Pruitt, Langhorne Slim, Mary Gauthier, Fancy Hagood, Brooke Eden, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Elizabeth Cook, and many more.

A Message of Resilience

Musically and lyrically, “Tennessee Rise” bears the unmistakable stamp of its writers, Russell and her husband and musical partner, JT Nero. The lyrics contain a powerful message, referencing the Trail of Tears and the tragic mass shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville. These heart-wrenching events have influenced the song’s creation, with Russell previously speaking about the climate of fear following the tragedy and how it impacted her daughter.

Upholding Values Amid Challenges

The attempted expulsion of the Tennessee Three—Johnson, Justin Pearson, and Justin Jones—after they refused to be silenced in state legislative sessions, sparked widespread protests against the state’s gun laws. While Pearson and Jones, both Black lawmakers, were expelled by Republican lawmakers, Johnson, a white woman, narrowly held onto her seat. The incident shed light on the overwhelming supermajority that leans far-right in the legislature.

A Celebration of Resilience and Unity

Allison Russell’s Grammy win earlier this year made headlines, but it also drew controversy in the legislature. A measure to congratulate her was stalled by Republican members, while a similar resolution to honor the group Paramore passed without incident. Hayley Williams, a member of Paramore, stood in solidarity with Russell, refusing to accept the honor. The incident highlighted the need for continued support of artists like Russell who use their platform to advocate for social justice.

F5 Magazine celebrates the power of music and its ability to bring people together. “Tennessee Rise” is a testament to the resilience and unity of artists who are passionate about creating positive change in their communities. It serves as a reminder that music can be a powerful force for social justice and equality.
