Easter and chocolate go hand in hand, but why not switch things up this year with a boozy twist? Aldi has just launched a new tipple inspired by the famous Cadbury Creme Egg, and it’s making waves in the adult beverage world.
With the fondant yolk’s flavors of milk chocolate and vanilla blended with liqueur, the Ballycastle chocolate creme liqueur is now available in stores and is expected to be a sell-out at just £7.69 for 70cl. To see how it stacks up against other sweet tipples on the market this spring, drinks guru Helena Nicklin put it to the test and rated it alongside other chocolate-flavored boozy treats.
Asda Extra Special – 4/5 (Espresso martini chocolate, cream liqueur, 70cl, £8)
For fans of boozy, chocolatey, caffeine-filled cocktails, this creamy ready-to-drink option is a must-try. The bottle’s contents are beautifully balanced, with just the right amount of coffee and chocolate flavor. Unlike some other espresso martinis, it isn’t overly sugary, making it ridiculously moreish.
Aldi Ballycastle – 4/5 (Chocolate creme liqueur, 70cl, £7.69)
Aimed at Creme Egg lovers, this liqueur delivers on its promise of super sweetness. The fondant flavor is spot on, with notes of vanilla and white chocolate. While it could be a bit thicker in consistency, it can be enjoyed over ice or mixed into a cocktail. With its great price and Easter-themed appeal, it’s definitely worth a try.
M&S Salted Caramel – 5/5 (Brownie liqueur, 70cl, down to £10 in price drop)
If you’re a fan of freshly baked salted caramel brownies, this liqueur is a dream come true. It scored full marks and is well worth a try. With lots of cakey flavors going on and a perfectly balanced sweetness and saltiness in the caramel, it’s a winner. Plus, the price drop to just a tenner makes it even more appealing.
Rubis Chocolate Wine – 3/5 (50cl, £17, Ocado)
This might horrify fine wine purists, but it’s a vino made with the Rioja grape tempranillo, fortified like port, and blended with cacao essence. Surprisingly, it works! More like a liqueur than a traditional wine, it can be sipped chilled over ice or used in cocktails. It’s definitely a unique and interesting option.
Hotel Chocolat – 1/5 (Velvetised chocolate cream, 500ml, £22 – £18 with Clubcard – Tesco)
While you might expect big brand Hotel Chocolat to excel in the chocolate liqueur department, this one falls short. Thin and sugary with a taste akin to cheap chocolate milk with a splash of vodka, it’s not luxurious enough for the name or the price tag, unfortunately.
Tiptree Choc Orange – 3/5 (Liqueur, 35cl, £19.99, Amazon & Master of Malt)
With a lovely-looking bottle and a surprising clear liquid, this liqueur offers a super-sweet experience with lots of vanilla essence. While the orange flavor isn’t as pronounced as one might expect, it’s still an enjoyable choice.
Cocoa Wonderland – 4/5 (Chocolate porter, 440ml, £3.25, Morrisons)
A chocolate-flavored beer may not be traditional, but trust me when I say that it works like a dream. Combining dark porter with a touch of chocolate creates a delicious blend of flavors that will please both beer and chocolate lovers.
Asda Extra Special – 3/5 (Blonde chocolate cream liqueur, £8, 70cl)
Blonde chocolate is a trendy choice this spring, and this cream liqueur offers a creamier and more milky white chocolate vibe in your glass. While it could use a bit more flavoring, it’s still a drinkable option that’s worth a try.
So there you have it, a range of chocolate-flavored boozy treats to enjoy this Easter. Whether you prefer liqueurs, wine, or beer, there’s something for everyone. Indulge in the sweet flavors and celebrate the holiday with a touch of chocolatey goodness in your glass.
