Scotland is celebrating its first-ever National Square Sausage Day, a day dedicated to honoring and enjoying the beloved Scottish delicacy. Ayrshire butcher We Hae Meat declared March 25th as the inaugural celebration date. To join in the festivities, I decided to put the supermarkets’ square sausage offerings to the test and find the best lorne in the country.

LIDL, 4/5

LIDL’s Scotch beef steak lorne sausage is a winner in terms of both taste and value. Made by Prestwick-based butchers Halls, these sausages boast an impressive beef content of 72%. The high meat content is evident in the flavor, with a good balance of spices and pepper. These square slices are packed with flavor and are not overly salty like some others on the market. LIDL’s square sausage is a strong contender for the top spot.

ALDI, 5/5

ALDI’s Scotch Aberdeen Angus steak lorne sausages stand out from the competition due to their thickness and superior taste. With the same beef content as LIDL’s offering, these four-sided patties are bursting with flavor and spice. The white pepper adds a delightful kick, making these sausages a clear winner in my book.

WE HAE MEAT, 2/5

We Hae Meat, the butcher that kickstarted National Square Sausage Day, offers a traditional steak slice that is available at major supermarkets. However, with a lower beef content of 69%, these sausages didn’t quite match up to the competition. While they have an appealing appearance, the flavor falls short compared to some other options.

M&S, 3/5

M&S’s steak lorne sausages have the highest beef content at an impressive 76%. This is evident in their meaty taste. However, they appear more pasty compared to other square slices. The flavor, although present, is a bit lacking. Despite being the priciest option, these sausages were not my top choice among the bunch.

MORRISONS, 4/5

Morrisons’ steak lorne sausages, available from their butchers’ counter, have a different shape and texture compared to the others I tried. These square slices are flatter and cook faster. They exude a nostalgic charm, reminiscent of childhood sausage rolls. Crispier and packed with flavor, these sausages are a true delight and a standout in terms of taste.

In conclusion, my top pick for the best lorne in Scotland goes to ALDI. Their Aberdeen Angus steak lorne sausages are thick, packed with flavor, and offer excellent value for money. If you’re looking to indulge in a delicious square sausage, ALDI is the place to go.
