A Hobby Turned Lucrative Venture

Rachel Jimenez, a mum-of-two with no prior experience in business, decided to explore side hustles to make extra money alongside her nine-to-five job. She tried various ventures, from dog sitting to freelance writing and giving talks about budgeting and investing. Unfortunately, none of them took off.

However, everything changed for Rachel in 2019 when she stumbled upon her best-selling idea. While exploring a course on blogging, she came across a tutorial on making money from the small business marketplace, Etsy. Intrigued, Rachel decided to give it a shot.

Designing Success on Etsy

Rachel purchased the Etsy course and learned how to create and sell printables, such as wedding invitations. Armed with her knowledge and experience using Canva, she started designing digital products that fit around her busy family life.

“I watched the course every morning while getting ready for work,” Rachel said. “Then, during my lunch break and in the evenings after my son went to sleep, I implemented what I learned.”

The best part? Starting an Etsy shop requires minimal investment, with listings costing only 16p ($0.20). Sellers only pay fees after an item is sold.

Hustle as a Hobby to Thriving Business

Initially, Rachel treated her Etsy store as a hobby. It took her two weeks to make her first sale, earning just £3.97 ($5). However, she didn’t give up. Focusing on marketing and understanding her niche, Rachel started seeing a significant increase in sales.

From earning a modest £35.69 ($45) in her first month, Rachel now averages around £3568 ($4500) per month. That amounts to an extra £61,000 ($77k) per year. Her success on Etsy inspired her to share her knowledge and encourage other aspiring entrepreneurs.

“I would recommend people stay humble and get help to not give up too soon,” Rachel advises. “Success may be right around the corner, but you’d never know it if you always give up when things seem hard.”
