Strange Darling, the acclaimed horror film from director JT Mollner, has secured a major distribution deal for a wide theatrical release in the United States. This exciting development comes as a result of a partnership with Magenta Light Studios, a new company founded by veteran producer Bob Yari.
Premiering at the renowned genre event, Fantastic Fest in 2023, Strange Darling has been receiving widespread acclaim from audiences and critics alike. With a perfect 100% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 14 reviews, the film has been praised for its innovative storytelling and standout performances. Fans will be delighted to know that they can catch this thrilling masterpiece in theaters starting from August 23.
“We are thrilled to bring this unique and exceptional film, featuring outstanding performances by Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner, to audiences nationwide. The talented writer-director JT Mollner has crafted a cult classic that defies conventional storytelling,” said Bob Yari in an interview with Variety.
Willa Fitzgerald, known for her roles in MTV’s “Scream” series and “Reacher,” and Kyle Gallner, recognized for his work in “Smile” and “Scream 6,” star in this gripping cat-and-mouse thriller that explores the aftermath of a fateful encounter. Reviews suggest that viewers should go into the film with as little information as possible, leading to an interesting and mysterious marketing campaign.
JT Mollner, the visionary director behind the film, made his feature directorial debut with the critically acclaimed “Outlaws and Angels” at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016. He has garnered attention for his unique perspectives and is currently in the process of adapting Stephen King’s novel “The Long Walk” for Lionsgate, with Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games” series) set to direct.
Critics have lauded Mollner’s forward-thinking approach and his ability to pay homage to the genre’s roots while leaving his own indelible mark. As Variety wrote in its review from Fantastic Fest, “Mollner shows himself to be more forward-thinking than most of his genre peers. He’s clearly a student of the game, one who studied his forebears’ lessons with adroitness to better prepare himself to put his own mark on them.”
Strangely Darling is produced by the Emmy and Screen Actors Guild award nominee Giovanni Ribisi, who also serves as the director of photography. Ribisi’s exceptional camera work in the film has earned him a spot in Camerimage’s Cinematographers Debuts Competition. Additionally, former Miramax CEO Bill Block, Steven Schneider, and Roy Lee (known for “Barbarian”) have also contributed as producers.
